Apple mail exchange attachment on mail body

A very specific question!

When you send an email with an attachment using Apple Mail, the attachment is not included in the body of the email. Instead, it is sent as a separate file that is attached to the email.

Here's what happens behind the scenes:

  1. When you compose an email in Apple Mail and attach a file, the file is uploaded to a temporary location on your computer.
  2. The email client (Apple Mail) creates a message body that contains the text of the email, including any text you've written, and any formatting you've applied.
  3. The email client then adds the attachment to the email by creating a separate file that contains the attachment's metadata, such as the file name, size, and type.
  4. The email client then sends the email body and attachment metadata to the mail server, which stores the email in the recipient's mailbox.
  5. When the recipient opens the email, their email client (e.g., Apple Mail, Gmail, Outlook) retrieves the email body and attachment metadata from the mail server.
  6. The email client then downloads the attachment from the mail server and saves it to the recipient's computer.

So, to summarize, the attachment is not included in the body of the email. Instead, it is sent as a separate file that is attached to the email.
