POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) is a protocol used to retrieve email messages from a mail server. Apple Mail, being a popular email client, supports POP3 connections to retrieve email messages from a POP3 server.

Here's a step-by-step guide to set up Apple Mail to use a POP3 account:

Step 1: Create a new account in Apple Mail

  1. Open Apple Mail on your Mac or iOS device.
  2. Click on "Mail" in the top menu bar and select "Preferences" (or use the keyboard shortcut Command + Comma).
  3. Click on the "Accounts" tab.
  4. Click the "+" button at the bottom left corner of the window to create a new account.

Step 2: Enter your POP3 account settings

  1. In the "Account" window, select "Other Mail Account" and click "Continue".
  2. Enter your name, email address, and password.
  3. Select "POP3" as the account type.
  4. Enter the POP3 server address and port number provided by your email provider (e.g., pop.gmail.com and 995 for Gmail).
  5. Enter the SMTP server address and port number provided by your email provider (e.g., smtp.gmail.com and 587 for Gmail).
  6. Click "Create" to create the account.

Step 3: Configure POP3 settings

  1. In the "Account" window, click on the "Advanced" tab.
  2. Under "Incoming Mail Server", select "Use POP3" and enter the POP3 server address and port number.
  3. Under "Outgoing Mail Server", select "Use SMTP" and enter the SMTP server address and port number.
  4. Click "OK" to save the changes.

Step 4: Verify your account settings

  1. Click on the "Accounts" tab again.
  2. Select your new POP3 account and click the "Edit" button.
  3. Verify that the account settings are correct, including the POP3 and SMTP server addresses, port numbers, and authentication settings.
  4. Click "OK" to save the changes.

That's it! Your Apple Mail account should now be set up to use a POP3 account.
