Apple mail spam filter not working

Frustrating! Apple Mail's spam filter can be effective, but sometimes it may not work as expected. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the issue:

  1. Check your Junk Mail settings:
    • Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
    • Ensure that "Junk Mail" is enabled.
    • Check the "Filter Junk Mail" box.
  2. Update your Junk Mail filter:
    • Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
    • Click the "Update Filter" button.
    • Wait for the filter to update (this may take a few minutes).
  3. Mark spam messages as junk:
    • Open a spam message in Apple Mail.
    • Click the "Mark as Junk" button in the toolbar or press Command + Shift + J.
    • Repeat this process for multiple spam messages to help train the filter.
  4. Check your email account settings:
    • Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts.
    • Select your email account.
    • Ensure that the "Junk Mail" option is enabled under "Account Information".
  5. Disable and re-enable Junk Mail:
    • Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
    • Uncheck the "Junk Mail" box.
    • Wait for a few minutes.
    • Check the "Junk Mail" box again.
  6. Reset Apple Mail's Junk Mail filter:
    • Go to Terminal (in Applications/Utilities or use Spotlight to find it).
    • Type the following command and press Enter: defaults delete com.apple.mail JunkMailFilter
    • Restart Apple Mail.
  7. Check for updates:
    • Ensure that your Mac and Apple Mail are up to date.
    • Go to System Preferences > Software Update.
    • Install any available updates.
  8. Try a third-party spam filter:
    • Consider using a third-party spam filter like SpamSieve or SpamFilter.
    • These filters can work alongside Apple Mail's built-in filter.
  9. Contact your email provider:
    • If you're still experiencing issues, contact your email provider's support team.
    • They may be able to help you configure your email account's spam filter or provide additional assistance.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may want to consider seeking further assistance from Apple Support or a third-party email expert.
