Aquaman review

Jason Momoa's Aquaman is a cinematic tidal wave of fun, a superhero spectacle that's as silly as it is spectacular. Director James Wan, best known for his work on horror films like The Conjuring and Insidious, brings a similar sense of playfulness and irreverence to this DC Comics adaptation, and the result is a movie that's equal parts campy and cool.

Momoa, who first appeared as Aquaman in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is perfectly cast as the half-human, half-Atlantean hero. He brings a sense of brooding intensity to the role, but also a sense of humor and charm that makes him a compelling screen presence.

The story, which follows Aquaman as he battles to claim the throne of Atlantis and stop his half-brother, Orm (Patrick Wilson), from waging war on the surface world, is a bit of a mess. But who cares? The real draw here is the visuals, which are stunning. Wan and his team have created a world that's both fantastical and grounded, with elaborate sets and costumes that are a feast for the eyes.

The action scenes are also top-notch, with a thrilling underwater battle that's reminiscent of the best moments from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. And the supporting cast, which includes Amber Heard as Aquaman's love interest, Mera, and Willem Dafoe as the wise and wacky Aquaman mentor, Vulko, is excellent.

If you're looking for a superhero movie that's a little bit different, a little bit quirky, and a lot of fun, then Aquaman is the movie for you. Just be prepared to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the ride.

Grade: 3.5/4 stars

Recommendation: If you enjoyed the campy humor and over-the-top action of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy, you'll likely have a blast with Aquaman.
