Are 8945 forms mailed

A very specific question!

According to the IRS, the 8945 form, also known as the "Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Information Returns" is typically mailed to taxpayers who have filed Form 1041, U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts, and need an automatic 5-month extension to file their information returns.

The IRS does not automatically mail Form 8945 to all taxpayers. Instead, taxpayers who need an extension must file Form 7004, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns, by the original due date of the return.

However, if you have filed Form 1041 and need an extension, you can expect to receive Form 8945 in the mail if you have:

  1. Filed Form 1041 and requested an automatic 5-month extension using Form 7004.
  2. Paid the applicable extension fee (currently $600).

The IRS typically sends Form 8945 to taxpayers who have requested an extension and paid the fee. If you have not received your Form 8945, you can contact the IRS or file Form 7004 to request an extension.

Please note that the IRS may not always mail Form 8945, especially if you have filed electronically or have an existing account with the IRS. In such cases, you may need to file Form 7004 or contact the IRS directly to request an extension.
