Bump mail
"Bump mail" is a colloquialism that refers to a situation where a piece of mail, usually a letter or package, is returned to the sender because it was unable to be delivered to the intended recipient.
This can happen for a variety of reasons, such as:
- The recipient has moved and the mail is returned to the sender because the new address is unknown.
- The recipient has changed their name and the mail is returned to the sender because the new name is not recognized.
- The recipient has passed away and the mail is returned to the sender because the estate or executor is unknown.
- The mail is undeliverable due to an incorrect or incomplete address.
When a piece of mail is returned to the sender, it is often referred to as "bumped" or "returned to sender." This can be frustrating for the sender, especially if they were expecting a response or payment from the recipient.
In some cases, the sender may be able to update the address or provide additional information to help the mail be delivered. However, if the mail is unable to be delivered, it may be returned to the sender and considered "bumped."
