Here's a simple recipe to make Dal Makhani at home:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup black lentils (urad dal)
- 1 cup kidney beans (rajma)
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium tomato, diced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
- Salt, to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream
- Fresh cilantro, for garnish
Instructions:
- Rinse the lentils and kidney beans, and soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight. Drain and set aside.
- Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook until they're lightly browned.
- Add the garlic, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, cardamom, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 1 minute, until the spices are fragrant.
- Add the tomatoes and cook until they're soft and mushy.
- Add the lentils and kidney beans, along with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
- Stir in the butter and heavy cream. Season with salt to taste.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with basmati rice or naan bread.
