Glob and mail
A blast from the past!
Glob and Mail were two popular Canadian newspapers that merged in 1980 to form the Toronto Star.
Here's a brief history:
- The Globe was founded in 1844 by George Brown, a Scottish-born journalist and politician. It was known for its progressive views and was a strong advocate for Canadian independence from Britain.
- The Mail and Empire was founded in 1872 by George Campbell, a Scottish-born journalist. It was known for its conservative views and was a strong supporter of the British monarchy.
- In 1936, the Globe and the Mail and Empire merged to form the Globe and Mail, with the Globe's progressive views dominating the editorial direction.
- In 1980, the Globe and Mail merged with the Toronto Star, another prominent Canadian newspaper, to form a single publication with a broader range of perspectives.
Today, the Toronto Star is one of the largest and most widely read newspapers in Canada, with a circulation of over 200,000 copies daily.
