Gmail imap and smtp
Gmail provides access to its email service through two protocols: IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol).
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
IMAP is a protocol that allows you to access and manage your email messages on a remote server, such as Gmail. With IMAP, you can:
- Retrieve email messages from the server
- Delete, move, or copy messages on the server
- Search for messages using various criteria (e.g., subject, sender, recipient)
- Use folders and labels to organize your messages
To use IMAP with Gmail, you'll need to enable IMAP in your Gmail settings. Here's how:
- Log in to your Gmail account.
- Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner and select "See all settings."
- Scroll down to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab.
- Select the "Enable IMAP" checkbox.
- Click "Save Changes."
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
SMTP is a protocol that allows you to send email messages from a remote server, such as Gmail. With SMTP, you can:
- Send email messages from your Gmail account
- Use a third-party email client or app to send email messages
- Use a custom domain name to send email messages
To use SMTP with Gmail, you'll need to enable SMTP in your Gmail settings. Here's how:
- Log in to your Gmail account.
- Click on the gear icon in the upper right corner and select "See all settings."
- Scroll down to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab.
- Select the "Enable POP" or "Enable IMAP" checkbox (depending on your email client or app).
- Click "Save Changes."
