Here are the steps to set up Gmail and Outlook to use SMTP:
Gmail Setup:
- Log in to your Gmail account.

- Click on the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab.
- Scroll down to the "SMTP" section.
- Enable "Less secure app access" by toggling the switch to the "On" position. This is required for Outlook to connect to your Gmail account.
- Note down the SMTP server settings:
- Server: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 587
- Username: your Gmail address
- Password: your Gmail password
- In Outlook, go to File > Account Settings > Account > More Settings > Outgoing Server.
- Enter the SMTP server settings you noted down:
- Server: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 587
- Authentication: Use same settings as my incoming mail server
- Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA): unchecked
- Click "OK" to save the changes.
Outlook Setup:
- Open Outlook and go to File > Account Settings > Account > More Settings > Outgoing Server.
- Click on the "Outgoing Server" tab.
- Enter the SMTP server settings:
- Server: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 587
- Authentication: Use same settings as my incoming mail server
- Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA): unchecked
- Click "OK" to save the changes.
Troubleshooting Tips:
- Make sure that you have enabled "Less secure app access" in your Gmail account settings.
- Check that your Gmail account is not set to use 2-Step Verification. If it is, you will need to generate an App Password and use that instead of your regular password.
- If you are still having trouble, try disabling the "Less secure app access" setting and then re-enabling it.
- If you are using a firewall or antivirus software, make sure that it is not blocking the SMTP connection.
