How to check whether mail has been seen

The age-old question of "has my email been read?"

Unfortunately, there's no foolproof way to determine for certain whether someone has read your email, as it depends on various factors, such as the email client or service being used, the recipient's email settings, and their level of technical expertise. However, here are some methods you can use to get an idea:

  1. Read Receipt: Some email providers, like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo, offer a read receipt feature. When you send an email with a read receipt request, the recipient's email client will send a notification back to you when they open the email. To request a read receipt in Gmail, go to Settings > General > Reading > Request read receipt.
  2. Delivery Reports: Many email providers offer delivery reports, which can indicate whether an email has been delivered to the recipient's inbox. However, this doesn't necessarily mean the email has been read.
  3. Email Client Settings: Some email clients, like Microsoft Outlook, allow you to track the status of your emails. You can check the "Sent Items" folder or use the "Track" feature to see if the email has been opened.
  4. Third-Party Tools: There are various third-party tools and browser extensions available that claim to track email opens, such as:
    • Email tracking plugins like HubSpot, Yesware, or Streak.
    • Browser extensions like Email Hunter or Email Tracker.
    • Online services like Email Open Tracker or OpenTracker.
  5. Check the Email Header: You can check the email header to see if the email has been forwarded or replied to. This might indicate that the recipient has read the email.
  6. Ask the Recipient: If you really need to know, you can always ask the recipient if they've read your email. This is the most straightforward approach, but it might not always yield the answer you're looking for.

Keep in mind that some email providers and clients may not support these methods, and even if they do, there's always a chance that the recipient might not have read the email.
