How to find out if mailed tax return was accepted

The waiting game! Here are some ways to check if your mailed tax return was accepted:

  1. Online Account: If you filed your taxes electronically, you can check the status of your return through the IRS's "Where's My Refund?" tool on the IRS website. If you mailed a paper return, you can still use this tool to check the status of your return.
  2. IRS2Go Mobile App: Download the IRS2Go app on your mobile device and follow the prompts to check the status of your return.
  3. Phone: Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (individuals) or 1-800-829-4933 (businesses) to speak with a representative. Be prepared to provide your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), filing status, and the exact date you mailed your return.
  4. Mail: If you haven't received a confirmation from the IRS, you can send a letter to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return. Address the letter to:
    • Internal Revenue Service
    • 1111 Constitution Ave NW
    • Washington, DC 20224-0002
    • Attn: Return Status
  5. Check Your Bank Account: If you opted for direct deposit, you can check your bank account to see if the refund has been deposited.
  6. Check Your Mail: If you haven't received a confirmation from the IRS, check your mail for a letter or notice from the IRS. This may indicate that your return was accepted or if there are any issues that need to be addressed.

If your return is rejected, the IRS will send you a notice explaining the reason for the rejection. You can then correct the errors and resubmit your return.

Remember to keep a copy of your return and any supporting documents, as you may need to refer to them if there are any issues with your return.
