How to toggle field codes in mail merge

In Microsoft Word, you can toggle field codes on and off in a mail merge document by following these steps:

Method 1: Using the "Toggle Field Codes" button

  1. Open your mail merge document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Go to the "Mailings" tab in the ribbon.
  3. Click on the "Finish & Merge" button in the "Actions" group.
  4. Select "Edit Individual Documents" to open the mail merge document in a new window.
  5. Press Ctrl + Shift + F9 (Windows) or Command + Shift + F9 (Mac) to toggle field codes on or off.

Method 2: Using the "Show/Hide" button

  1. Open your mail merge document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Go to the "Home" tab in the ribbon.
  3. Click on the "Show/Hide" button in the "Paragraph" group.
  4. Click on the "Field Codes" button in the dropdown menu to toggle field codes on or off.

Method 3: Using the keyboard shortcut

  1. Open your mail merge document in Microsoft Word.
  2. Press Alt + F9 to toggle field codes on or off.

When field codes are turned on, you'll see the actual code used to create the merge field, such as MERGEFIELD FirstName. When field codes are turned off, the merge field will be replaced with the actual value from the data source.
