Iphone mail trash instead of archive

A common frustration!

By default, the "Trash" folder on your iPhone's Mail app is set to permanently delete emails, rather than archiving them. This means that when you move an email to the Trash folder, it will be deleted from your account permanently after a short period of time (usually 30 days).

If you want to archive emails instead of deleting them, you can change the behavior of the Trash folder in the Mail app settings. Here's how:

  1. Open the Mail app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on the "Mail" button in the top left corner to go back to the inbox.
  3. Tap on the "Settings" icon (looks like a gear) in the top right corner.
  4. Scroll down and tap on "Accounts".
  5. Tap on the account you want to change the Trash behavior for.
  6. Tap on "Trash" under the "Account" section.
  7. Toggle the switch next to "Permanently delete messages when I move them to Trash" to the OFF position.

Once you've made this change, emails you move to the Trash folder will be archived instead of deleted. You can still permanently delete emails from the Trash folder by tapping "Edit" and then "Mark All" > "Delete Permanent".

Note that this setting only affects the Trash folder behavior for the specific account you changed. If you have multiple accounts set up on your iPhone, you'll need to change the setting for each account separately.
