Addressing the Mail
To ensure that your mail reaches the inmate, make sure to address it correctly:
- Use the inmate's name and booking number (if known)
- Use the following format: [Inmate's Name], [Booking Number], [Facility Name], 450 Bailey St, Los Angeles, CA 90017
What Can Be Sent
The LASD allows the following types of mail to be sent to inmates:
- Letters
- Postcards
- Photographs (no more than 4 per envelope)
- Books (new and used, but not more than 2 at a time)
- Magazines (new and used, but not more than 2 at a time)
- Greeting cards
- Stationery
What Cannot Be Sent
The LASD prohibits the following types of mail to be sent to inmates:
- Contraband (e.g., weapons, drugs, cell phones)
- Obscene or sexually explicit materials
- Gang-related materials
- Threatening or harassing mail
- Mail that promotes or glorifies violence, hate crimes, or illegal activities
- Mail that contains more than 4 photographs
Mail Processing
The LASD processes mail Monday through Friday, except for holidays. Mail is typically delivered to inmates within 3-5 business days after it is received.
Inmate Mail Restrictions
Inmates are not allowed to receive mail that is:
- Written in a language other than English
- Contains more than 4 pages of writing
- Contains more than 1 photograph
- Is written in a code or cipher
- Is written on a piece of paper that is larger than 8.5 x 11 inches
Inmate Mail Rules
Inmates are not allowed to:
- Send or receive mail that is threatening or harassing
- Send or receive mail that promotes or glorifies violence, hate crimes, or illegal activities
- Send or receive mail that contains contraband
- Send or receive mail that is obscene or sexually explicit
