Mac mail reindex

The joys of dealing with a slow and unresponsive Mac Mail app!

Reindexing your Mac Mail database can help resolve issues like:

  1. Slow performance
  2. Missing or duplicate emails
  3. Errors when searching or filtering emails
  4. Inconsistent email syncing

Here's how to reindex your Mac Mail database:

Method 1: Reindex using the Mail app

  1. Open the Mail app on your Mac.
  2. Go to Mail > Preferences (or press Cmd +,).
  3. Click on the Accounts tab.
  4. Select the account you want to reindex from the list.
  5. Click on the Advanced tab.
  6. Click on the Rebuild button next to Mailbox.
  7. Confirm that you want to rebuild the mailbox by clicking Rebuild again.

Method 2: Reindex using the Terminal

  1. Open the Terminal app on your Mac (you can find it in the Applications/Utilities folder or use Spotlight to search for it).

  2. Type the following command and press Enter:

    mdutil -i on /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Mail

Replace /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Mail with the path to your Mail database. You can find this path by going to Finder > Go > Go to Folder and typing ~/Library/Mail.

  3. Wait for the reindexing process to complete. This may take some time, depending on the size of your email database.
