Mail delivered on juneteenth

What a wonderful coincidence!

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, is a significant holiday in the United States that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It is celebrated on June 19th of every year.

And, as fate would have it, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has a special tradition of delivering mail on Juneteenth. In fact, the USPS has been delivering mail on this day since 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation was officially read aloud to enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas.

According to the USPS, the tradition of delivering mail on Juneteenth began when the postal service was tasked with delivering the news of freedom to enslaved African Americans in the South. The Emancipation Proclamation, issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, had declared all slaves in Confederate territory to be free, but it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the news to the enslaved population.

As a result, the USPS has continued to deliver mail on Juneteenth as a way to honor the legacy of freedom and equality that this holiday represents. It's a small but meaningful way to acknowledge the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history.

So, if you're expecting a special delivery on Juneteenth, you might just get a little extra joy in the mail!
