Mail tax returns forget to sign

The stress of tax season!

Don't worry, it's not the end of the world if you forget to sign your tax return. Here's what you can do:

  1. Don't panic: Take a deep breath and don't rush to file your return again. You can still fix the issue.
  2. Sign and date the return: Grab a pen and sign your name in the space provided for the "Signature" or "Authorized Representative" section. Make sure to date the return as well.
  3. Attach a statement: If you're mailing your return, attach a statement explaining the situation. You can write something like: "I am submitting this tax return with a late signature. Please accept it as timely filed."
  4. Mail the return: Send the signed and dated return to the IRS or your state tax authority, along with any required payment or payment voucher.
  5. Keep a copy: Make sure to keep a copy of your signed return for your records.

If you're filing electronically, you can usually sign your return electronically using a digital signature. Check with your tax preparation software or e-file provider to see if this option is available.

Important: If you're filing for an extension, make sure to sign and date the extension request as well.

Penalties and interest: If you forget to sign your return and it's considered late, you may be subject to penalties and interest. However, if you can show that the delay was due to reasonable cause and not willful neglect, you may be able to avoid these penalties.

To avoid this situation in the future, make sure to double-check your return before mailing it. You can also consider using tax preparation software that offers electronic signing and filing options.
