Mailing 2022 tax return
The joys of tax season!
To mail your 2022 tax return, you'll need to follow these steps:
Step 1: Gather your documents
Make sure you have all the necessary documents and information to complete your tax return. This may include:
- W-2 forms from your employer(s)
- 1099 forms for freelance work, interest, dividends, or capital gains
- 1098 forms for mortgage interest and property taxes
- Charitable donation receipts
- Medical expense receipts
- Any other relevant tax-related documents
Step 2: Choose the correct mailing address
There are different mailing addresses for different types of tax returns. Make sure to use the correct address:
- For individual tax returns (Form 1040): Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1302, Charlotte, NC 28201-1302
- For business tax returns (Form 1120, Form 1120S, etc.): Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 802551, Cincinnati, OH 45280-2551
Step 3: Prepare your tax return
Use tax preparation software or work with a tax professional to prepare your tax return. Make sure to:
- Sign and date your return
- Include all required attachments, such as W-2s and 1099s
- Make sure your return is accurate and complete
Step 4: Mail your tax return
Place your tax return and any attachments in a sturdy envelope or package. Make sure to:
- Use a first-class mail stamp (or a certified mail receipt if you want to track your return)
- Write "2022 Tax Return" on the outside of the envelope
- Include your name and address on the envelope
Step 5: Keep a copy for your records
Keep a copy of your tax return and all supporting documents for at least three years in case of an audit or other issues.
Important deadlines
Make sure to mail your tax return by the following deadlines:
- April 18, 2023, for individual tax returns (April 15, 2023, is a Sunday, and the next business day is April 18, 2023)
- March 15, 2023, for business tax returns (Form 1120, Form 1120S, etc.)
