Mailing a letter how many stamps
The number of stamps needed to mail a letter depends on the weight and size of the letter, as well as the destination. Here are the current USPS rates for mailing a letter:
First-Class Mail Letters

- Size: Up to 11.5 inches long, 6.125 inches wide, and 0.25 inches thick
- Cost: 1 stamp (currently $0.55)
Additional Ounces
- Each additional ounce: 1 stamp (currently $0.20)
International Mail
- Weight: Up to 1 oz (28.35 grams)
- Size: Up to 11.5 inches long, 6.125 inches wide, and 0.25 inches thick
- Cost: 1 stamp (currently $1.20) for destinations in Canada and Mexico, and 2 stamps (currently $2.20) for destinations in other countries
Large Envelopes
- Weight: Up to 13.5 oz (382.4 grams)
- Size: Up to 12 inches long, 15 inches wide, and 0.75 inches thick
- Cost: 2 stamps (currently $1.10) for domestic destinations, and 3 stamps (currently $3.30) for international destinations
Special Services
- Certified Mail: Add $3.45 to the regular postage rate
- Return Receipt: Add $1.45 to the regular postage rate
- Priority Mail: Use a separate Priority Mail envelope and pay the applicable rate, which varies depending on the weight and destination.
