- Black embroidery floss or yarn for the brim
- White or cream-colored yarn for the hatband (optional)
Gauge: 12 dc stitches x 7 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
Abbreviations:

- dc = double crochet
- sc = single crochet
- st = stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
Pattern:
Brim: Ch 2, 6 dc into 2nd ch from hook; join with a sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around; join with a sl st. (6 dc)
Round 2 - 5: Ch 2, dc in each st around; join with a sl st. (6 dc)
Body of the Hat: Ch 2, dc in each st around; join with a sl st. (6 dc)
Round 1: Ch 2, dc in each st around; join with a sl st. (6 dc)
Round 2 - 7: Ch 2, dc2tog (see Special Stitches below), dc in each st around; join with a sl st. (3 dc)
Round 8: Ch 2, dc in each st around; join with a sl st. (3 dc)
Special Stitches:
- dc2tog (double crochet 2 together): (Insert hook in next st, yarn over, draw up a loop) twice, yarn over, draw through all 3 loops on hook.
Assembly:
- Fasten off the brim and body of the hat.
- Use a tapestry needle to weave in ends.
- If desired, use black embroidery floss or yarn to embroider a mailman's logo or a simple design on the brim.
- If desired, use white or cream-colored yarn to create a hatband. Ch 2, dc evenly around the top of the hat, join with a sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.
- Stuff the hat with polyester fiberfill or cotton batting to give it a more rounded shape.
Tips:
- Use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.
- Make sure to maintain a consistent tension while crocheting to ensure a smooth, even fabric.
- You can adjust the size of the hat by changing the hook size or the number of starting chain stitches.
- You can also add a chin strap or a hatband with a button or a Velcro closure for a more secure fit.
I hope you enjoy making this mailman hat!
