Outlook hotmail pop3

A blast from the past!

Outlook.com (formerly Hotmail) uses IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) instead of POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) to retrieve email messages. IMAP is a more modern and feature-rich protocol that allows for two-way synchronization between the email client and the server, whereas POP3 is a one-way protocol that downloads emails from the server to the client.

However, if you still want to use POP3 with Outlook.com, you can do so by setting up a POP3 account in your email client. Here are the settings you'll need:

Outlook.com POP3 settings:

Note: When using POP3, you'll need to configure your email client to delete emails from the server after downloading them to your local machine. This is because POP3 is a one-way protocol, and the server won't know that you've downloaded the emails. If you don't delete the emails from the server, they'll still be present on the server and will be downloaded again the next time you check your email.

Why use IMAP instead of POP3?

IMAP is generally recommended over POP3 for several reasons:

  1. Two-way synchronization: IMAP allows for two-way synchronization between the email client and the server, which means that changes made to your emails on the client will be reflected on the server, and vice versa.
  2. Better performance: IMAP is generally faster and more efficient than POP3, especially when dealing with large email attachments or multiple email accounts.
  3. More features: IMAP supports more advanced features, such as folder synchronization, search, and filtering, which are not available with POP3.

If you're still using POP3 with Outlook.com, it's recommended to switch to IMAP for a more seamless and feature-rich email experience.
