Rumaila operating organisation

The Rumaila Operating Organisation (ROO) is a joint venture between the Iraqi government and BP (British Petroleum) to develop and operate the Rumaila oil field in southern Iraq. The field is one of the largest oil fields in the world, with estimated reserves of over 17 billion barrels of oil.

The ROO was established in 2009 as a 60:40 joint venture between the Iraqi government and BP, with the Iraqi government holding a 60% stake and BP holding a 40% stake. The ROO is responsible for the development and operation of the Rumaila field, which is located in the Basra Governorate of southern Iraq.

The ROO's main objectives are to:

  1. Increase oil production from the Rumaila field to meet Iraq's growing energy demands.
  2. Improve the efficiency and reliability of oil production from the field.
  3. Enhance the safety and environmental performance of the field's operations.
  4. Develop the field's infrastructure and facilities to support future growth and expansion.

To achieve these objectives, the ROO has implemented a number of initiatives, including:

  1. Drilling new wells and re-completing existing wells to increase oil production.
  2. Upgrading the field's processing facilities to increase oil processing capacity.
  3. Implementing new technologies and systems to improve the efficiency and reliability of oil production.
  4. Enhancing the safety and environmental performance of the field's operations through the implementation of new safety procedures and environmental management systems.
  5. Developing the field's infrastructure and facilities to support future growth and expansion, including the construction of new roads, buildings, and other facilities.

The ROO has made significant progress in recent years, with oil production from the Rumaila field increasing from around 1.1 million barrels per day (mb/d) in 2009 to over 1.4 mb/d in 2020. The ROO has also implemented a number of initiatives to improve the safety and environmental performance of the field's operations, including the implementation of new safety procedures and environmental management systems.

Overall, the ROO plays a critical role in meeting Iraq's growing energy demands and is an important part of the country's oil industry.
