Scale mail or leather armor

The age-old debate: scale mail or leather armor?

Both have their advantages and disadvantages, which I'll outline below:

Scale Mail:

Advantages:

  1. Protection: Scale mail provides excellent protection against slashing and piercing attacks, as the overlapping scales absorb and distribute the impact.
  2. Durability: Scale mail is relatively durable and can withstand significant damage before breaking or cracking.
  3. Mobility: Scale mail allows for good mobility, as the scales are designed to move with the wearer.

Disadvantages:

  1. Weight: Scale mail can be heavy, which can affect the wearer's mobility and endurance.
  2. Cost: Scale mail is often more expensive to produce and maintain than leather armor.
  3. Noise: The rattling of the scales can be noisy, making it easier for enemies to detect the wearer's approach.

Leather Armor:

Advantages:

  1. Lightweight: Leather armor is generally lighter and more comfortable to wear than scale mail.
  2. Affordable: Leather armor is often less expensive to produce and maintain than scale mail.
  3. Quiet: Leather armor is quieter than scale mail, making it easier for the wearer to move stealthily.

Disadvantages:

  1. Protection: Leather armor provides less protection than scale mail, as it is more prone to piercing and slashing attacks.
  2. Durability: Leather armor is more susceptible to damage and wear, requiring more frequent maintenance and replacement.
  3. Limited mobility: Leather armor can restrict mobility, especially if it is heavily reinforced or has a stiffened design.

Ultimately, the choice between scale mail and leather armor depends on the specific needs and preferences of the wearer. If protection and durability are the top priorities, scale mail might be the better choice. However, if mobility and stealth are more important, leather armor could be the way to go.

What do you think? Do you have a preference for scale mail or leather armor?
