  1. Oceanic crust formation: Ophiolites form at mid-ocean ridges, where new oceanic crust is created through volcanic and tectonic processes. This process involves the upwelling of mantle rocks, the melting of the mantle, and the formation of basaltic rocks.

  4. Melting and magma generation: As the oceanic crust is subducted, it encounters increasing heat and pressure, causing it to melt and generate magma. This magma rises through the overlying plate, forming a chain of volcanoes.
  5. Emplacement: The magma and volcanic rocks that form at the subduction zone are emplaced onto the overlying plate, forming an ophiolite complex. This process can occur through a variety of mechanisms, including:
    • Tectonic emplacement: The ophiolite complex is pushed onto the overlying plate through tectonic forces.
    • Magma injection: Magma is injected into the overlying plate, forming a series of sills and dykes.
    • Hydrothermal activity: Hydrothermal fluids circulate through the ophiolite complex, depositing minerals and forming economic deposits.
  6. Uplift and exhumation: The ophiolite complex is eventually uplifted and exhumed through a combination of tectonic and erosional processes, exposing the rocks to the surface.
