To enable two-factor authentication (2FA) and secure login for your Gmail account, follow these steps:
Step 1: Enable 2-Step Verification
- Sign in to your Gmail account.
- Click on your profile picture or initial in the top right corner.
- Click on "My Account" from the dropdown menu.
- Scroll down to the "Sign-in & security" section.
- Click on "2-Step Verification" and then click on "Get started".
- Follow the prompts to set up 2-Step Verification using one of the following methods:
- Google Authenticator app
- SMS text message
- Voice call
- Authenticator app (e.g. Microsoft Authenticator, Authy)
Step 2: Set up App Passwords (optional)
If you use apps or devices that don't support 2-Step Verification, you'll need to set up App Passwords. This will generate a unique password for each app or device.
- Go back to the "Sign-in & security" section.
- Click on "App passwords" and then click on "Generate".
- Select the app or device you want to generate a password for.
- Follow the prompts to create a new password.
Step 3: Enable Advanced Protection Program (APPS)
The Advanced Protection Program (APPS) is a free service that provides additional security features, including:
- Enhanced 2-Step Verification
- Secure login notifications
- Malware scanning
To enable APPS:
- Go back to the "Sign-in & security" section.
- Click on "Advanced Protection Program" and then click on "Enroll".
- Follow the prompts to set up APPS.
Additional Tips
- Make sure to keep your 2-Step Verification codes and App Passwords secure and do not share them with anyone.
- Use a password manager to generate and store unique, strong passwords for each of your accounts.
- Regularly review your account activity and sign-in history to detect any suspicious activity.
