Unthreading gmail mail

Unthreading Gmail emails can be a bit tricky, but I'll guide you through the process.

What is unthreading?

In Gmail, emails are automatically threaded together based on their subject line and conversation. This means that related emails are grouped together under a single thread, making it easier to follow conversations. However, sometimes you might want to break this thread and treat each email as a separate message. This is called unthreading.

Why would you want to unthread emails?

There are a few reasons why you might want to unthread emails:

  1. Organization: If you have a long conversation with multiple emails, unthreading can help you organize your inbox by separating each email into its own thread.
  2. Searchability: Unthreading can improve search results, as each email becomes a separate entity that can be searched individually.
  3. Customization: Unthreading allows you to customize your email threads, such as moving individual emails to different labels or folders.

How to unthread Gmail emails

Here are the steps to unthread Gmail emails:

Method 1: Using the Gmail web interface

  1. Log in to your Gmail account on the web.
  2. Open the email thread you want to unthread.
  3. Click on the three vertical dots at the top right corner of the email list.
  4. Select "Unthread this conversation" from the dropdown menu.
  5. Confirm that you want to unthread the conversation by clicking "Unthread" in the pop-up window.

Method 2: Using the Gmail mobile app

  1. Open the Gmail app on your mobile device.
  2. Open the email thread you want to unthread.
  3. Tap the three vertical dots at the top right corner of the email list.
  4. Select "Unthread conversation" from the dropdown menu.
  5. Confirm that you want to unthread the conversation by tapping "Unthread" in the pop-up window.

Method 3: Using filters and labels

  1. Create a filter that applies to the email thread you want to unthread.
  2. In the filter settings, select "Apply the label" and choose a label that you want to apply to each individual email.
  3. Save the filter.
  4. The emails in the thread will be labeled individually, effectively unthreading the conversation.

Important note

Unthreading emails will not delete or move the emails, but rather separate them into individual threads. If you want to delete or move individual emails, you'll need to do so manually.
