Usps mailing format
The United States Postal Service (USPS) uses a standardized format for mailing letters and packages. Here are the general guidelines:
Address Format:
- Use the correct address format for the type of mail you are sending:
- For First-Class Mail (letters, postcards, and lightweight packages): Use the following format:
- Recipient's name
- Street address or post office box number
- City, state, and ZIP code
- For Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express: Use the same format as above, but also include the recipient's phone number and email address (optional).
- For First-Class Mail (letters, postcards, and lightweight packages): Use the following format:
- Use a clear and legible handwriting or print the address using a typewriter or computer.
- Use all capital letters for the city, state, and ZIP code.
Address Elements:
- Recipient's Name: Include the recipient's first and last name, if possible.
- Street Address or Post Office Box Number: Use the correct street address or post office box number for the recipient.
- City: Use the city name, not the city's abbreviation.
- State: Use the two-letter state abbreviation (e.g., CA for California).
- ZIP Code: Use the correct five-digit ZIP code for the recipient's location.
Additional Tips:
- Use a return address on the envelope or package, including your name and address.
- Use a clear and legible font, such as Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica, in size 10 or 12 points.
- Avoid using abbreviations or symbols, except for the state abbreviation and ZIP code.
- Do not use stickers or tape to attach the address label, as this can cause delays or damage to the mailpiece.
- Make sure the address is centered on the envelope or package, and the edges are at least 1/4 inch from the top and bottom of the mailpiece.
Special Cases:
- APO/FPO Addresses: For mail sent to military personnel stationed overseas, use the following format:
- APO or FPO (depending on the location)
- AA, AP, or AE (depending on the location)
- ZIP code 093 (for APO) or 962 (for FPO)
- International Addresses: For mail sent to international destinations, use the following format:
- Recipient's name
- Street address or post office box number
- City
- Country name (in English)
- Postal code (if applicable)
- Country's two-letter abbreviation (e.g., CA for Canada)
Remember to always check with the USPS website or consult with a postal employee if you have any questions or concerns about mailing formats.
