Usps temporary mail stop
A convenient way to take a break from mail delivery!
A USPS Temporary Mail Stop is a service offered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that allows you to temporarily suspend mail delivery to your address. Here's how it works:
Why would you want to do this?
You might want to use a Temporary Mail Stop for various reasons, such as:
- Moving out of a house or apartment and don't want to forward mail.
- Going on a long trip or vacation and don't want to accumulate mail.
- Renovating or repairing your home and don't want to receive mail during that time.
- Avoiding junk mail or unwanted solicitations.
How to set up a Temporary Mail Stop
To set up a Temporary Mail Stop, you can:
- Online: Go to the USPS website (usps.com) and click on "Hold Mail" under the "Mail & Shipping" tab. Fill out the online form with your name, address, and the dates you want to suspend mail delivery.
- Phone: Call the USPS Customer Service number (1-800-275-8777) and ask to set up a Temporary Mail Stop.
- In-person: Visit your local post office and ask to set up a Temporary Mail Stop.
What happens during a Temporary Mail Stop
When you set up a Temporary Mail Stop, the USPS will:
- Hold all mail and packages at your local post office.
- Not deliver mail or packages to your address during the specified period.
- Keep your mail and packages for a maximum of 30 days.
- Return undeliverable mail to the sender.
Important notes
- You can set up a Temporary Mail Stop for a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 30 days.
- You can only set up one Temporary Mail Stop at a time.
- If you need to extend your Temporary Mail Stop, you'll need to contact the USPS again.
- Keep in mind that some mail, such as certified mail, registered mail, and priority mail, may still be delivered to your address even if you have a Temporary Mail Stop in place.
