Venmo scam asking for email address
The Venmo scam!
It's a common phishing scam where scammers try to trick you into giving away your personal information, including your email address. Here's how it typically works:
- You receive a message on Venmo from someone claiming to be a friend or acquaintance.
- The message is usually friendly and innocuous, asking you to "check out" a link or "verify" your account.
- The link may look legitimate, but it's actually a phishing page designed to steal your login credentials or other sensitive information.
- The scammer may ask you to provide your email address, claiming it's necessary to "secure" your account or to "help" with a "technical issue."
Here's what you should do if you receive such a message:
- Do not respond to the message or click on any links.
- Do not provide your email address or any other personal information.
- Report the scam to Venmo's customer support team. You can do this by going to the Venmo app, tapping on the three horizontal lines (⋮) in the top right corner, and selecting "Help" > "Report a problem."
- Change your Venmo password as a precautionary measure.
- Monitor your account for any suspicious activity.
Remember, Venmo will never ask you to provide your email address or any other sensitive information via a message or link. If you're unsure about a message or link, it's always best to err on the side of caution and report it to Venmo's customer support team.
Stay safe, and happy Venmo-ing!
