What constitutes as media mail

Media Mail is a type of mail service offered by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that allows for the mailing of certain types of materials at a lower rate than regular First-Class Mail. To qualify for Media Mail rates, the mailpiece must meet certain criteria:

  1. Content: Media Mail is limited to the mailing of printed matter, such as:
    • Books (including textbooks, novels, and reference books)
    • Magazines
    • Newspapers
    • Sound recordings (e.g., CDs, vinyl records)
    • Video recordings (e.g., DVDs, VHS tapes)
    • Film and video tapes
    • Printed music
    • Sheet music
  2. Format: Media Mail is only available for mailpieces that are:
    • Printed on paper or cardboard
    • Not wrapped or packaged in a way that makes them resemble a package (e.g., no boxes, bags, or envelopes with padding)
  3. Weight and size: Media Mail has specific weight and size limits:
    • Maximum weight: 70 pounds (31.8 kg)
    • Maximum length: 108 inches (274.3 cm)
    • Maximum girth: 130 inches (330.2 cm)
  4. No advertising: Media Mail is not allowed to contain advertising or promotional materials.
  5. No personal or business correspondence: Media Mail is not suitable for sending personal or business correspondence, such as letters, postcards, or greeting cards.
  6. No hazardous materials: Media Mail is not allowed to contain hazardous materials, such as flammable or explosive substances.
  7. No perishable items: Media Mail is not suitable for sending perishable items, such as food, plants, or live animals.

If your mailpiece meets these criteria, you can use Media Mail to send it at a lower rate than regular First-Class Mail. However, keep in mind that Media Mail is a slower service than First-Class Mail, with delivery times ranging from 2-8 business days, depending on the distance.
