What happens to junk mail in outlook

When you receive junk mail in Outlook, it depends on the settings and features you have enabled to determine what happens to it. Here are some possible scenarios:

  1. Junk Email Filter: Outlook has a built-in Junk Email Filter that can automatically move suspected junk emails to the Junk Email folder. You can enable this feature by going to File > Options > Mail > Junk Email and selecting the "Enable junk email filtering" checkbox.
  2. Spam folder: If the Junk Email Filter is enabled, suspected junk emails will be moved to the Spam folder. You can access the Spam folder by clicking on the "Spam" folder in the Navigation Pane or by searching for "Spam" in the Search bar.
  3. Deleted: If the Junk Email Filter is not enabled or if the email is not marked as junk, the email will be delivered to your Inbox. You can then delete it manually by selecting it and pressing the "Delete" key or by using the "Delete" button in the toolbar.
  4. Rules: You can also set up custom rules in Outlook to automatically move or delete junk emails. To do this, go to Home > Rules > Manage Rules & Alerts and create a new rule. You can specify conditions, such as sender, subject, or keywords, to identify junk emails and specify actions, such as moving to a specific folder or deleting.
  5. Third-party filters: Some email providers, such as Microsoft 365 or Office 365, offer additional junk email filtering features that can be enabled through their web-based email interfaces. These filters may be more effective at blocking junk emails than the built-in Junk Email Filter in Outlook.
  6. Blacklisting: Some email providers may also use blacklists, which are databases of known spam senders. If an email is sent from a blacklisted sender, it may be automatically blocked or moved to the Junk Email folder.

It's worth noting that no junk email filter is 100% effective, and some junk emails may still make it to your Inbox. However, by enabling the Junk Email Filter and setting up custom rules, you can reduce the amount of junk email you receive and make it easier to manage your email inbox.
