What is mail rupee

A blast from the past!

Mail Rupee was a popular online payment system in India, introduced by India Post (the postal service of India) in 2000. It allowed users to send and receive money online, similar to modern-day digital payment systems like PayPal or Google Pay.

Here's how it worked:

  1. Users could register for a Mail Rupee account on the India Post website or at a post office.
  2. They could then send money to anyone with a Mail Rupee account, using their email address or mobile number.
  3. The recipient could receive the money in their Mail Rupee account, which could be used to pay bills, buy online goods, or withdraw cash from an ATM.
  4. Mail Rupee also offered a debit card, which allowed users to withdraw cash from ATMs or make purchases online.

Mail Rupee was a convenient way to send and receive money online, especially for people who didn't have access to traditional banking services. However, the service was eventually discontinued in 2011 due to low usage and high operational costs.

Although Mail Rupee is no longer available, India Post has since introduced other digital payment services, such as India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) and e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) services, to facilitate online transactions and financial inclusion.
