What states automatically send mail in ballots
As of the 2022 election cycle, the following states automatically send mail-in ballots to all registered voters:
- Oregon: Oregon has been conducting all-mail elections since 2000, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- Washington: Washington state has been conducting all-mail elections since 2011, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- Colorado: Colorado has been conducting all-mail elections since 2013, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- Utah: Utah has been conducting all-mail elections since 2013, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- Hawaii: Hawaii has been conducting all-mail elections since 2018, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- California: California has been conducting all-mail elections in certain counties since 2018, and plans to expand to all counties in 2022. Not all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail, but many do.
- Vermont: Vermont has been conducting all-mail elections since 2020, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- New Jersey: New Jersey has been conducting all-mail elections since 2020, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- Delaware: Delaware has been conducting all-mail elections since 2020, and all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail.
- Maryland: Maryland has been conducting all-mail elections in certain counties since 2020, and plans to expand to all counties in 2022. Not all registered voters receive a ballot in the mail, but many do.
It's worth noting that even in states that don't automatically send mail-in ballots to all registered voters, voters may still be able to request a mail-in ballot or vote absentee in person.
