Where does mac mail store files
Mac Mail, also known as Mail.app, stores its files in the following locations:
For macOS High Sierra (10.13) and later:
~/Library/Mail/V2/
- This is the default location where Mail stores its data, including emails, attachments, and settings.
- The
V2
folder is specific to the Mail app and contains all the data for your email accounts.
For macOS Sierra (10.12) and earlier:
~/Library/Mail/
- This is the default location where Mail stores its data, including emails, attachments, and settings.
For iCloud Mail:
- iCloud stores your email data, including emails, attachments, and settings, on their servers. When you access your iCloud Mail account on your Mac, the data is synced from the iCloud servers to your local machine.
For other email accounts:
- If you're using an email account from a third-party provider (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook), Mail stores its data locally on your Mac, but the actual emails and attachments are stored on the provider's servers.
Important notes:
- When you delete an email account from Mail, the associated data is not deleted immediately. Mail keeps a copy of the data for a short period, usually a few days, before it's purged from the system.
- If you're using a third-party email client or app, it may store its data in a different location on your Mac.
Remember to always back up your important data, including your email accounts, to prevent loss in case of a system failure or data corruption.
