Where to mail 1040 extension
If you need to file an extension for your 1040 tax return, you can mail it to the following address:
Internal Revenue Service Attn: Extension of Time to File 1111 Constitution Ave NW Washington, DC 20224-0002
Make sure to include the following information on the envelope:
- Your name and address
- The words "Extension of Time to File" on the top of the envelope
- The tax year for which you are filing the extension (e.g. "2022")
You can also file your extension electronically using the IRS Free File program or by using tax preparation software. If you choose to file electronically, you will not need to mail a paper extension.
It's also important to note that you should file your extension by the original due date of your tax return, which is typically April 15th. If you miss the deadline, you may be subject to penalties and interest.
Here are some additional tips to keep in mind:
- Make sure to sign and date the extension form (Form 4868) before mailing it.
- Keep a copy of the extension form for your records.
- If you owe taxes, you can pay online, by phone, or by mail. You can also set up a payment plan with the IRS.
- If you are due a refund, you do not need to make a payment.
