Can you get first passport via mail

In the United States, it is not possible to obtain a first-time passport via mail. According to the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs, all first-time passport applicants must appear in person at a passport acceptance facility to submit their application and supporting documents.

However, there are a few exceptions:

  1. Life-or-Death Emergencies: If you have a life-or-death emergency and need a passport urgently, you can contact the National Passport Information Center (NPIC) to request an expedited appointment at a regional passport agency. You will need to provide proof of the emergency and a valid photo ID.
  2. Military and Diplomatic Personnel: Certain military and diplomatic personnel may be eligible for expedited passport services, including the ability to submit their application by mail. However, this is typically only available for personnel who are serving abroad or have a critical mission requirement.

For all other first-time passport applicants, you will need to appear in person at a passport acceptance facility to submit your application and supporting documents. The acceptance facility will review your application, witness your signature, and send it to the Department of State for processing.

Here are the general steps to obtain a first-time passport:

  1. Gather required documents: Proof of U.S. citizenship (birth certificate or naturalization certificate), proof of identity (driver's license or government-issued ID), and a photocopy of both sides of your ID.
  2. Fill out the application: Download and complete Form DS-11, Application for a U.S. Passport, or fill it out online and print it.
  3. Visit a passport acceptance facility: There are over 9,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States, including post offices, libraries, and county clerk's offices. Make an appointment if possible.
  4. Submit your application: Bring all required documents and the application fee to the acceptance facility. The acceptance agent will review your application, witness your signature, and send it to the Department of State for processing.
  5. Pay the fee: The application fee for a U.S. passport book is currently $110 for adults (16 and older) and $80 for children (15 and younger). The execution fee for the acceptance agent is typically $35.

Processing times can vary depending on the workload of the Department of State, but routine service typically takes 6-8 weeks. Expedited service is available for an additional fee, which takes 2-3 weeks.
