Presort mail requirements
The joys of presorting mail!
Presorting mail is a process that involves sorting and preparing mail pieces to meet the requirements of the United States Postal Service (USPS) for efficient and cost-effective delivery. Here are the key requirements:
1. Barcodes:
- Each mail piece must have a barcode (also known as a Intelligent Mail barcode or IMb) that contains the delivery point sequence (DPS) and the mailer's unique identifier (MID).
- The barcode must be printed in a specific format and location on the mail piece.
2. Sortation:
- Mail pieces must be sorted by zip code, 5-digit zip code, or 3-digit zip code, depending on the type of mail and the destination.
- Mail pieces must be sorted in ascending order by zip code.
3. Bundling:
- Mail pieces must be bundled together in groups of 10-50 pieces, depending on the type of mail and the destination.
- Bundles must be secured with rubber bands or tape.
4. Weight and Size:
- Mail pieces must meet the USPS weight and size requirements for each type of mail (e.g., First-Class Mail, Priority Mail, etc.).
5. Addressing:
- Mail pieces must have a complete and accurate address, including the recipient's name, street address, city, state, and zip code.
- The address must be printed in a specific format and location on the mail piece.
6. Postage:
- Mail pieces must have the correct postage affixed, based on the weight and size of the mail piece.
7. Mail Preparation:
- Mail pieces must be prepared in a way that allows for easy sorting and processing by the USPS.
- This includes ensuring that mail pieces are not damaged, torn, or creased.
8. Compliance:
- Mailers must comply with all USPS regulations and guidelines for presorting mail.
- Mailers must also comply with any additional requirements or restrictions imposed by the USPS or other regulatory agencies.
By following these requirements, mailers can ensure that their mail pieces are properly sorted and prepared for efficient and cost-effective delivery by the USPS.
