Sylpheed is a popular open-source email client that can be used to access Gmail accounts. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you set up Sylpheed to access your Gmail account:

Prerequisites:

  1. Sylpheed email client installed on your computer (available for Windows, macOS, and Linux).
  2. A Gmail account with 2-Step Verification (2SV) enabled (recommended for security).

Step 1: Create an App Password

To set up Sylpheed with your Gmail account, you'll need to generate an App Password. This is a 16-character password that you'll use to authenticate with Sylpheed.

  1. Go to your Google Account settings by clicking on your profile picture in the top right corner of the Gmail homepage.
  2. Click on "Security" from the menu.
  3. Scroll down to the "Signing in to Google" section.
  4. Click on "App passwords" and then "Generate".
  5. Select "Other (Custom name)" and enter a name for your app password (e.g., "Sylpheed").
  6. Click "Generate" to generate the App Password.

Step 2: Set up Sylpheed

  1. Launch Sylpheed and click on "File" > "New" to create a new account.
  2. Select "IMAP" as the account type.
  3. Enter your Gmail address and the App Password you generated in Step 1.
  4. Set the "Incoming server" to "imap.gmail.com" and the "Port" to "993".
  5. Set the "Outgoing server" to "smtp.gmail.com" and the "Port" to "587".
  6. Check the box next to "Use SSL/TLS" for both incoming and outgoing servers.
  7. Click "OK" to save the account settings.

Step 3: Configure Sylpheed

  1. Go to "Tools" > "Options" and select the "Accounts" tab.
  2. Select your Gmail account and click on the "Edit" button.
  3. In the "Edit Account" window, select the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Check the box next to "Use IMAP" and set the "IMAP folder" to "INBOX".
  5. Click "OK" to save the changes.

Step 4: Test your setup

  1. Go back to the Sylpheed main window and click on the "Refresh" button to refresh your email list.
  2. You should now see your Gmail emails listed in Sylpheed.
  3. Try sending an email from Sylpheed to test the outgoing connection.
