Gmail web slice

A blast from the past!

A Gmail Web Slice was a feature introduced by Google in 2008 as part of Internet Explorer 8's Web Slices feature. It allowed users to subscribe to specific parts of a webpage, such as a Gmail inbox, and receive updates in the form of a mini-application on the Windows taskbar.

Here's how it worked:

  1. Users would install Internet Explorer 8 and enable Web Slices.
  2. They would then visit the Gmail website and click on the "Subscribe to Web Slice" button next to the inbox label.
  3. This would create a mini-application on the Windows taskbar, which would display the latest emails in the inbox.
  4. The Web Slice would update automatically in the background, allowing users to quickly glance at their inbox without having to open a new browser window or tab.

The Gmail Web Slice was a convenient feature for users who wanted to stay on top of their email without having to constantly check their inbox. However, it was eventually discontinued by Google in 2011, likely due to the rise of more modern and efficient ways to manage email, such as mobile apps and browser extensions.

Today, you can still access your Gmail inbox using a web browser, but you won't find the Web Slice feature anymore.
