Steel mailbox plansa
A DIY project! Here are some steel mailbox plans to help you build a sturdy and secure mailbox:
Materials:
- 1/4" thick steel plate (for the mailbox body and lid)
- 1/2" thick steel plate (for the base and sides)
- Steel screws
- Welding equipment (optional)
- Paint or coating (optional)
Tools:
- Welder (if you plan to weld the pieces together)
- Drill press
- Jigsaw or bandsaw (for cutting curves)
- Grinder (for deburring and smoothing edges)
- Measuring tape
- Square

Design:
The design is simple and functional. You can adjust the dimensions to fit your needs.
Mailbox Body:
- Cut four pieces of 1/4" steel plate to the following dimensions:
- Two pieces: 12" x 6" (for the sides)
- One piece: 12" x 4" (for the back)
- One piece: 12" x 4" (for the front)
- Weld or screw the sides together to form a rectangular box. Make sure the corners are square.
- Attach the back and front pieces to the sides using steel screws.
Lid:
- Cut one piece of 1/4" steel plate to the following dimensions:
- 12" x 6" (same as the sides)
- Weld or screw the lid to the top of the mailbox body, making sure it is centered and secure.
Base:
- Cut one piece of 1/2" steel plate to the following dimensions:
- 12" x 6" (same as the sides)
- Attach the base to the bottom of the mailbox body using steel screws.
Sides:
- Cut two pieces of 1/2" steel plate to the following dimensions:
- 12" x 6" (same as the sides)
- Attach the sides to the mailbox body using steel screws, making sure they are flush with the top and bottom of the mailbox.
Assembly:
- Assemble the mailbox body, lid, base, and sides using steel screws.
- Weld the pieces together if you have welding equipment.
- Deburr and smooth the edges of the steel plate to prevent injury.
- Paint or coat the mailbox with a rust-resistant finish if desired.
Tips and Variations:
- Use a rust-resistant coating or paint to protect the steel from corrosion.
- Add a lock or latch to secure the lid.
- Install a flag or indicator to alert mail carriers of incoming mail.
- Add a decorative trim or design to the mailbox body or lid.
- Use a different shape or design for the mailbox body or lid.
